Charles Manwaring memorandum and account book, 1895-1906.

An account book and a memorandum book kept by a Hartford, Connecticut, builder whose avocation was books and genealogy. The volume includes a memorandum of stock, books, furniture and prospectuses, cash accounts, a memorandum of books that did not belong to him, book sales and payments received, his charges to individuals for doing research, a record of the time he spent developing an abstract of early Connecticut probate records, an account of his salary, and a record of how many of his series of probate volumes were sold. Manwaring was selling books for various publishers while also developing a published compilation of original probate records in the state.

Charles William Manwaring was born in Waterford, New London County, CT, May 9, 1829. A builder and contractor, Mr. Manwaring became interested in genealogical research in later life. At the age of 70, he decided to develop a concise and durable form for the original probate record books of Connecticut, then located at the State Capitol and the Hall of Records in Hartford.
